Hands-free lead: three ways to use it
Published November 1, 2026

A hands-free lead is three leads in one. The same 300 cm cord works as a long lead, as a short lead or across your body with your hands free. You switch in a few seconds on the way, without unclipping anything.
The lead has a Biothane® strap that you use as a handle or shoulder strap, and snap hooks and rings in solid brass. Clip the snap hook at the end of the cord to your dog's collar or harness. Then choose how to wear it.
1. As a long lead

Hold the Biothane® strap as a handle and let the cord run at full length to your dog. This gives your dog the most room: for sniffing, in the park or on a quiet path.
2. As a short lead

Double up the cord and clip it at the handle. The lead is now short and your dog walks close beside you. Useful in town, when crossing the road or when another dog comes your way.
3. Hands-free, across your body

Wear the Biothane® strap across your shoulder, like a bag. Clip the snap hook at your hip into the ring on the cord. Your hands are free for a coffee, your phone, a pushchair or the poo bags.
Hands-free works best with a dog that walks calmly beside you. If your dog still pulls hard, hold the lead by the handle instead.
Setting the length

The rings on the cord slide. Where a snap hook sits in a ring, slide that ring along the cord until the length is right. This is how you fit the lead to you and your dog, also when you wear it across your body.
In short
- Room to sniff? Use it as a long lead, with the handle in your hand.
- Busy street? Double up the cord for a short lead.
- Hands free? Wear it across your shoulder.
- Too long or too short? Slide the ring along the cord.
The hands-free lead comes in three colours, and as a set with a braided collar.
How to keep the lead clean and looking good is explained under care.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the hands-free lead?
The cord is 300 cm. You set the length yourself: long for sniffing, short at your side in town, or hands-free across your body. So there is only one size.
Can I clip the hands-free lead to a harness?
Yes. The snap hook clips to the D-ring of most harnesses, just as it does to the ring of a collar.
Can I walk hands-free with a dog that pulls?
Hands-free works best with a dog that walks calmly beside you. If your dog still pulls hard, hold the handle in your hand. You have more grip and can react faster.
